Christopher Nolan’s war-saga ‘Dunkirk’, based on the poignant story of soldiers being evacuated from the beaches during the Second World War, has been globally praised by both critics and audiences, alike.
It’s kind of funny when I described the genre to be a war-saga as there’s hardly an appearance made by the enemy throughout the course of the movie barring the fighter jets that bombarding sea vessels. Also, despite being a war-saga, the movie isn’t defined by action sequences, but by its calm visions. The man walking hopelessly into the sea backed by the moving background score is what stayed with me after the movie ended. Even the most nail-biting of sequences have a rather mournful undertone attached.
The movie opens in 1940 with about half a million British and Allied troops held under scrutiny by the German army on the picturesque northern French beaches. Although the Channel was narrow enough that one could clearly see England across, the waters were too shallow for warships to approach the beaches. So some 700 civilian crafts, known as the “Little Ships of Dunkirk”, made their way from England for the rescue.
The minimal usage of dialogues in the movie will remind you of classic silent cinema. Dunkirk’s music can be called a worthy protagonist as it ebbs and flows its way to glory. The film divulges into smaller sub-plots that individually evoke different emotions. At one moment you will feel anxious about Farrier’s malfunctioning fuel gauge while he’s in the air; at another you will sympathise with the British and French soldiers helplessly findling their way to home in the treacherous waters, both fighting the same war.
