Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Kharbanda starrer is a beautiful small town romantic love story turned into a revenge saga. It’s a story of a sweet and simple guy Satyendra Mishra (Rajkummar Rao) who is a government clerk with very little ambition and Aarti Shukla (Kriti Kharbanda) a college topper with a dream of becoming an IAS officer. Forced by their middle-class conservative parents Satyendra and Aarti meet with no intention of getting married but slowly and gradually they start to discover some common interest amongst each other and decide to get married.
This tale is set in the society where patriarchy and misogyny are normalized enough that the parents believe in the fact of marrying their boy in a financially lower class family and fathers paying an unaffordable dowry just to marry their daughter in a “perfect” family.
But the story takes turns when the girl decides to run away on the night of the wedding leaving Sattu and his family humiliated in front of his friends and relatives which makes Sattu a changed man and after few years the fate brings them together and rest is the story.
Debutant director Ratnaa Sinha in this film addressed many social issues like dowry, bribe and gender inequality etc. but the film was a little overextended and too melodramatic. What stood up in this movie was the flawless and on point Rajkumar Rao who delivered a brilliant performance and the supporting characters were very real and very believable as small-town stereotypes. Kriti Kharbanda was charming and complimented Rajkumar really well.
The film is full of clichés and had a really clumsy and befuddled climax but despite these minor hiccups, the movie is full of humour and romance so “Shaadi Mein Zaroor Jana “.
