Comicstaan, An Amazon Prime Original released on 13th July 2018, is a nine episode stand up comedy Show-Down that brings 9 of the India’s funniest and versatile comedians together.
Abish Mathew and Sumukhi Suresh as the show hosts and a seven-member jury panel comprising of Tanmay Bhat, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, Sapan Verma, Kaneez Surka, and Naveen Richard. Comicstaan’s show format is such that the 7 judges traveled to Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore for conducting open mics and selecting the top 10 contestants, once the top 10 contestants are selected they battle it out in the next seven weeks and each week one judge gets to mentor the contestants for a specific comedy style in which they are the specialist. After these seven grilling weeks top 5 contestants by score will battle it out in the Comicstaan final which is the 9th and the final episode of the series. Also, the winner of the comicstaan takes home a cheque of 10 Lakh Ruppees.
The show from the first look, looks very impressive but whether it will live up to the hype or not, we will see that below where we review each episode as it releases.
Episode 1 : The Chosen Ones
First episode of Comicstaan starts with the host of the show Abhish Mathew and Sumukhi Suresh explaining the show format followed by the introduction of the 7 judges. This episode has a very casual appeal to it where all the 9 comedians (7 Judges and 2 Hosts) are sitting together going through the AV of the shortlisted contestants, shortlisted from thd open mics held at Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
The judges share their opinions about each stand up which for the audiences provides an insight into what they really look for in the good comic. Judges also share their stand up experiences which helps the audience to empathize with them. Overall the first episode was pretty nice and a good start to the show.
The top 10 selected candidates are :
- Sejal Bhat (Hometown: Bengaluru) – She has an idea of path breaking technology to generate electricity (Clue: It has something to do with the dicks 🙂
- Shankar Chugani (Hometown: Coonoor) – He is short and has danced dressed like a girl
- Shashwat Maheshwari (Hometown: Kanpur) – No one can sell him a flat with a pool side view
- Prashasti Singh (Hometown: Amethi) – She comes from a small town where Rahul Gandhi is their Mehendra Bahubali
- Saurav Mehta (Hometown: Kolkatta) – He and Vijay Mallya went to the same school
- Rahul Dua (Hometown: Ludhiana) – He is a champion in FLAMES
- Nishant Suri (Hometown: Delhi) – He lives every day as his last (Clue : He is from Noida)
- Aishwarya Mohanraj (Hometown: Mumbai) – Her mother hates Men
- Rueben Kaduskar (Hometown: Mumbai) – Her Girlfriend thinks that he comes thrice
- Arnav Rao (Hometown: Chennai) – He had a class mate with surname Boob
“Comedy brings happiness in our mundane lifes, much like the rain bring colors to the most arid of deserts.”
Episode 2 : Kahaniya with Biswa
Second Episode of Comicstan has Biswa Kalyan Rath (Biswa Mast Aadmi) as the Mentor who specializes in anecdotal comedy. Anecdotal Comedy simply means story telling which is comical in nature and is definitely not a tragedy, also the stories may be true or partly true.
This episode has some amazing story telling done by the contestants which keeps you hooked. The first performer of the show ended up being the best performer Mr. Shankar Chugani who’s story is about his boss trying to stop him from leaving the job by offering him a Electric Bike. The sketch looks simple in writing but was performed very well by Shankar aka Shanky and left everyone laughing.
Episode 3 : Off Topic with Tanmay
Third Episode of Comicstaan has Tanmay Bhat from AIB as the mentor who specializes in Topical Comedy. Topical Comedy/ Satire is some thing you take off from the news, but its the universal truth you speak of eventually. While doing topical comedy it is better to have a stand which may or may not be in line with the most popular sentiment.
Contestants chose many topics ranging from Politics, Opinions of/on Social Media, Rahul Gandhi, Donald Trump, North Korea, #NotAllMen, #MeToo and many more. But the stand out performance and the highest scorer of this episode was Saurav Mehta whose performance simply swayed the audience as well as the judges, his topic was the recent exclusion of Taj Mahal from UP tourist booklets.
Overall the episode is full of some fine performances.
Episode 4: Everyday things with Sapan
Fourth episode of Comicstaan has Sapan Verma from East India Comedy or EIC as the mentor who specializes in Observational Comedy. Observational Comedy simply means that you do jokes based on your observations, these observations are usually the things that society accepts as normal. The show was great and saw contestants come up with some mind boggling observations which are obviously ignored by all of us. And the top performer this week was Shankar Chugani who at the end of his set killed it with his comparison of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi the two dance forms to smoking up a joint which was hands down hilarious.
Episode 5: Improv Battle with Kaneez
Fifth episode of Comicstaan has Kaneez Surka as the mentor who specializes in Improvisational Comedy (sometimes shortened to improv comedy) which simply means comedy made up on the spot without any prior preparation or anything. For this particular episode 10 contestants were split into the group of 2 teams – ‘Bananas’ and ‘Ek Sitaphal’. Total 6 rounds were played each round had a name such as “Kitne Words The”, “Public Sab Janti Hai”, “Accent Quadrant”, “Mere Pass Punch Line Hai”. Overall Bananas won and Rahul Dua and Prashasti Singh got 1 extra point each for being the stand out performers from each team.
Episode 6: Naveen and Sumukhi act Funny
Sixth episode of Comicstaan has Naveen Richard as the mentor who specializes ( have read specialises too many times, and the first line is generic fot all, can something be done?) in Sketch Comedy. Sketch Comedy is a shortened version of a sitcom, typically performed live and has everything in it – the start, the middle and an ending. This week, contestants based on their rankings were paired together to perform their sketches The best performance of the night was by Shashwat Maheshwari and Nishant Suri where Shashwat played the role of a pilot who goes to an eye doctor(played by Nishant) for an eye check up.
Some of the sketches were really hilarious and will definitely keep you hooked.
Episode 7: Comedy of Terrors with Kanan
Seventh episode has Kanan Gill as the mentor who specializes in Comedy of Errors, which means that the contestant will be given topics on the spot and they have to perform on those topics. This particular episode is an error in it self, how in the world is it different from Improv that has already taken place. Moreover, most of the performances were boring and there was only one silver lining, Rahul Dua’s performance. Overall A thumbs down to this episode.
8. Episode 8 : Alternate Theories with Kenny (Released on 10th August)
Eighth episode has Kenny Sebastian as the mentor who specializes in Alternative Comedy, which means it differs from traditional punchline jokes and it has no restrictions such as stage restrictions. This episode was a roller coaster as it started with some dull performances which also includes the performance of Shankar Chugani, who’s performance was not up to the mark when compared to his past performances. Nevertheless the show ended on a high with two perfect performances by Nishant Suri and Aishwarya Mohanraj.
The Second last performance was by Nishant Suri, who played a character of Street play artist finding his friend Ramesh. Nishant also took Kenny’s idea of No Restriction(Stage Restriction) literally. He scored a near perfect score of 9.8 where except Tanmay Bhat every other judge gave him a 10.
The last performance was by Aishwarya Mohanraj got the highest score of the season of a perfect 10. Aishwarya Mohanraj in her set itself declared herself as the Best Comic ever and gave a hilarious PowerPoint Presentation on the same.
Overall the episode was great and after 8 weeks we have our final 5 contestants who will compete in the final. Top 5 contestants are : Rahul Dua, Prashasti Singh, Nishant Suri, Saurav Mehta and Shankar Chugani.
9. Episode 9 : Season Finale with Top 5 Contestants
Season Final released on August 17th, 2018 was full on entertaining right from the start. The shooting of this episode took place at “Royal Opera House” in Mumbai. The show started with all the 7 judges delivering back to back performances each of 2 min, and it is obvious to say the performances were hilarious. After that Top 5 contestants gave their performances and finally the winner of Comicstaan Season 1 was decided.
The WINNER of COMICSTAN SEASON 1 is : NISHANT SURI
Overall the show attempts to outline the nitty gritty involved in being a professional comedian. The series of episodes and different genres of comedy clearly define that it is not just about cracking jokes, comedy is rather a hard skill to master.

Been watching @comicstaan. It has been amazing for most parts. Some good performances. However, the format is heavily biased against people performing first. They always end up scoring the lowest, it affects their overall positions. 🙁 A relook may be reqd. here. @PrimeVideoIN

Last night I watched @comicstaan.
People, if you’re having a lousy morning, a bad hair day, lousy noon, miserable evening, or a regretful night, watch Cominstaan.
I am not saying it will make you roll on the floor laughing, but I am sure it will leave you smiling. 😊
